A Song for My Son
From a very, very young age I can remember my parents singing particular songs to me. My mom had her staples and my dad had his as well. My mom always sang the Mexican birthday song "Las Mananitas," also "Feed the Birds" and "Stay Awake," both from Mary Poppins as well as a song that she made up (my personal favorite,) that she dubbed "Everyone Loves Lindsay". My dad sang me "Bilbo Baggins" from the Lord of the Rings story, "Inch Worm," from Sesame Street and "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music. I'll never for as long as I live forget every.single.solitary word of each of those songs. Music has always meant so much to me, and I want it to mean something to my son also. Everytime I hear the song "Make You Feel My Love" by Bob Dylan, rather than thinking of it in a romantic sense, I think of how I ALREADY feel about my little boy. I realize that when Bob wrote the song, he probably intended it to be a love song...and it is, I just feel that it better suits the love of a mother and her son. I know that Jackson will be 23 years old and remember the lyrics of this song because his mother lulled him to sleep with it every night.
To Make You Feel My Love
By Bob Dylan
When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love
When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love
I know you haven't made your mind up yet
But I would never do you wrong
I've known it from the moment that we met
No doubt in my mind where you belong
I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling down the avenue
There's nothing that I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love
The storms are raging on the rollin' sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothing like me yet
I could make you happy, make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love
